Improvements for visitors at Royal Avenue Reserve
The facilities at Royal Avenue Reserve just keep getting better and better.
As well as a new toilet and park to be built by the Council, park users can also enjoy two new public shelters, compliments of the hardworking Sandringham Rotary Club, who have donated the materials and labour for these great assets that provides cover and shade over the picnic tables.
Mark Sutherland OAM, Shelter Project Coordinator from the Sandringham Rotary Club said:
“The Sandringham Rotary Club was keen to give back to the community and thought the building of shelters in Royal Avenue Reserve would provide a lovely atmosphere for families to enjoy a picnic or barbecue.
“We were aware that the playground and toilets were being upgraded and thought new public shelters would complement the facilities in this terrific local park.
“We have used the proceeds from our last three Santa rallies to fund the project and we hope the Sandringham community will enjoy the new shelters for many years to come”.

Black Saturday Fires
When the Black Saturday fires happened in 2009, Marysville was one of the townships that was severely effected. Many people lost loved ones, homes, animals and all of the worldly possessions. After watching the devastation unfold on the Sunday afternoon Mark decided that something had to be done to help these people who had lost their homes. As the founder of the Bayside Building Group, who are a group of ten local builders, the call went out for assistance. With the help of his fellow Builders, the Rotary Club of Sandringham, the Rotary Club of Alexandra and donations from his major suppliers he was able to build 20 colourbond sheds. Within the period of six weeks Mark had arranged with the Rotary Club of Alexandra 20 worthy recipients. With a band of 100 carpenters and apprentices they built the 20 sheds over four day long weekend. In January 2014 this community project was part of Mark receiving an Order of Australia medal in the Australia Day honours.
